New York/Kinshasa 13 April 2009 – Ms. Radhika Coomaraswamy, UN Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict will be visiting the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) from 14 to 21 April, at the invitation of the Government.

The objective of her visit is to ascertain first hand the situation of children with a view to facilitate collaboration among stakeholders to ensure greater protection for children in the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Ms. Coomaraswamy will pay particular attention to the issues of children associated with armed groups, sexual violence, internally displaced and refugee children as well as impunity for crimes against children.

The UN Special Representative will have a dialogue with the Government on these important issues. Furthermore, she will meet with relevant non state parties, members of the civil society, NGOs and children affected by conflict, in the effort to address grave violations against children as part of the regional peace process. She will undertake visits to the District of Ituri as well as the Provinces of North and South Kivu.

The mission is intended to follow-up on the Secretary General's report on the situation of children and armed conflict in the DRC (S/2008/693), within the framework of Security Council Resolution 1612 (2005) as well as on the Special Representative's previous visit in March 2007.

New York/Kinshasa le 13 avril 2009 – Radhika Coomaraswamy, Représentante Spéciale de l’ONU pour les enfants et les conflits armés sera en visite officielle en République démocratique du Congo RDC du 14 au 21 avril, à l’invitation du Gouvernement.

L’objectif de cette visite est d’évaluer la situation des enfants et de faciliter la collaboration entre les intervenants afin d’assurer une plus grande protection des enfants dans la crise humanitaire en cours. Mme Coomaraswamy portera une attention toute particulière à la situation des enfants associés aux groupes armés, aux victimes de violences sexuelles, aux enfants déplacé et réfugiés ainsi qu’à l’impunité pour des crimes commis contre les enfants.

La Représentante Spéciale de l’ONU ouvrira le dialogue avec le Gouvernement sur ces questions importantes. Elle rencontrera également des acteurs non gouvernementaux, des membres de la société civile, des ONG et des enfants affectés par le conflit afin de mieux répondre aux violations graves des droits de l’enfance. Elle se rendra dans le district de l’ Ituri ainsi que dans les provinces du nord et sud Kivu.

Cette mission fait suite au rapport du Secrétaire général sur les enfants dans les conflits armés en RDC (S/2008/693), dans le cadre de la résolution 1612 du Conseil de sécurité et à la première visite de la Représentante spéciale en mars 2007.
