Sandra Uwiringiyimana, 20, grew up in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo where, because of conflict, she was forced to the flee her home with her family and took refuge in Gatumba camp, in Burundi. A few months later, she witnessed what is now known as the Gatumba massacre. Rebels attacked the camp and murdered scores of people, including her younger sister.
In 2007, through a UN programme, she was able to go to the United States where she now lives and studies.
