Current situation

The Lake Chad Basin continued to face a volatile crisis driven by persistent crossborder insecurity and armed groups’ activities. Armed groups continue to commit grave violations against children, including killing and maiming, abduction, recruitment and use, and sexual violence, with girls disproportionately affected. Their use of improvised explosive devices remains a key driver of killing and maiming, with increasingly sophisticated design. Abductions often expose children to further violations, including recruitment and sexual violence. These grave violations, alongside broader insecurity, contribute to wider child protection concerns such as family separation and long-term psychosocial distress.

Developments and Concerns

  • Concern for the increase in abductions of children by JAS and ISWAP.
