Grave Violations

  • 130 grave violations against 72 children (42 boys, 18 girls, 12 sex unknown).
  • Killing (23) and maiming (22) of 45 children (27 boys, 9 girls, 9 sex unknown).
  • Sexual violence was perpetrated against 7 girls.
  • Attacks on schools (19) and hospitals (14).
  • 20 children (15 boys, 2 girls, 3 sex unknown) were abducted.
  • 25 incidents of the denial of humanitarian access were verified.

Current situation

While tensions in certain regions impact the protection of children, the Government has taken steps to strengthen child protection. This includes the designation of the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs as the technical lead with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs coordinating engagement with the United Nations. The Government continued its engagement with the United Nations on enhancing child protection measures and has intensified its efforts to strengthen the national child protection architecture, including through the establishment of national mechanisms for reporting and investigating violations.

Developments and Concerns

  • Commend the role of the Ministries of Women and Social Affairs and Foreign Afaris in facilitating child protection interventions and responding to allegations of violations transmitted to the Government by the United Nations.

  • Concern regarding the impact of tensions in certain regions on children, especially the incidents of killing and maiming, abduction, attacks on and military use of schools and hospitals, and the denial of humanitarian access.
